Yeah sounds like a plan. I am thinking I will install the seal with the 3rd member out, but tighten the nut properly after the 3rd member is back?

Brake drums are now tapped, to hopefully make removal easier next time. I also just bought some fittings which allow me to fit diff breather extensions Grin

No pics yet. I installed the new fitting in the rear diff, will buy some hose tomorrow. What do people use for filters when doing a DIY diff breather extension? I have heard of the cheap low pressure fuel filters, but is there a neater option?

I also cleaned up the gasket surface and inside of the diff housing. Next step should be to bolt on the third member and put the axle/brake backing plate assemblies in.

The fuel filters are the way to go. It can be neat if you do it properly. You could see if there is a t-fitting or something available then you could run both breathers through the one filter.

I bought 2 filters and 7 metres of fuel/oil hose today. I am thinking I'll take both hoses all the way to the top of the firewall somewhere, but mount the filters down lower so they are not as noticeable.

Since my last post, I've made a bracket for the filters, painted and mounted it, and mounted the filters to it. In the end, I settled for having them on the top of the drivers side inner guard, not too far from the firewall. There was a nice convenient mounting point there, and I couldn't find any sensible places to mount the filters lower down.

I clamped on the rear breather hose, and ran it to roughly level with the firewall. I will finish it off the breathers tomorrow and take some pics, as I'll finally be working on it while the sun is up.

I also fitted the new number plates.

Third member is now bolted back into the housing, and the axles are in. I will start putting the brakes back together tonight. This week the driveshaft will be going to Toyota for a new rear universal joint.

Does this gap look normal? I don't remember if it looked like this or not, before I took it apart. Both sides have the same gap, and the backing plate is bolted on fully, etc.

The entire assembly seems to rotate freely.

The rain stopped for long enough for me to go and sit a brake drum on there. It seems to fit properly with minimal gap between the drum and the backing plate, so I guess that means it's all good.

I guess I should update this thread. I'm still waiting for the universal joint, it got lost in the mail so he's sending me another one.

And one of my rear brake adjusters is stuffed, so I'll have to order those too.

Cowra wreckers are pretty good. They can be a bit pricey so do your homework, but they were always good when i needed rare escort parts.
